Owner Burnout: Making Delegation Work

An illustration of working with overload, mistrust and handing over responsibility.

Time off does not change the working week

The owner in this example answers messages on weekends. Holidays have not changed the approval requests waiting on return. Doing the task personally seems easier than explaining, checking and correcting it.

A previous assistant made mistakes. That experience now accompanies each handover: the new person has done nothing wrong yet, but trust is already difficult.

Hand over a defined responsibility

We choose one recurring responsibility and define its outcome, decision authority and escalation conditions. We also agree a review point so that constant questions do not replace the person’s own work.

After the handover, we examine the facts. If the result meets the agreement, we look at the impulse to interfere. If it does not, we distinguish unclear requirements, missing skills, limited authority and a failure to follow through.

One possible development

In this fictional story, fewer routine decisions return to the owner. Important questions remain under review, without requiring participation in every action. The freed time initially feels unfamiliar and becomes another practical adjustment.

This illustrates work on working arrangements. Coaching does not diagnose or treat a health condition.
