Midlife Crisis: Choosing the Next Stage

A real case from individual practice. Names and identifying details are withheld.

Situation

A 47-year-old owner and CEO of a B2B services company with approximately $4-5 million in revenue had built a business, family life and a home. Internally, he felt that he no longer wanted the life he had built.

For around two and a half years, energy had been low. Important decisions and delegation were postponed. His wife and teenage children noticed his distance. Change felt threatening to both business and family.

Before seeking support, he had been drinking more in the evenings. He did not drink alcohol during the 12 weeks of work.

Format

12 sessions, starting with goals and manageable experiments that did not require dismantling his existing life.

Main stages

Sessions 1-4: exploring fatigue and loss of meaning. He recognised that proving himself to his father and the market had driven him for years, while his own interests received less attention.

Sessions 5-8: testing alternatives. A day each week without operational work, reconsidering draining client relationships and a prepared conversation with his wife about their future.

Sessions 9-12: decisions, role allocation and a practical plan for the next stage.

Changes by week 12

  • He decided to sell 30% of the company to a strategic partner. Negotiations started in week 10; the transaction had not closed when the programme ended.
  • He defined his future role around strategy and key customers and began handing over other responsibilities.
  • He protected two evenings per week and one weekend morning for personal life.
  • Conversations with his wife became calmer, with shared discussion of the next 5-7 years.
  • He reported more energy and a chosen direction instead of inertia.

His reflection

“I no longer feel that life is passing me by. Now I have a direction I have chosen, rather than just inertia.”
